Hopefully the following will assist those in need.
First…….STAY OUT of flood water if at all possible.
There are many contaminants in the water. The flood water from OK/AR has been in fields, farms, roads and has collected animals, pesticides, oils, feces, debris and other unknown substances. STAY OUT of the water if possible. This will help from contracting any infectious pathogens in the water.
After the water subsides, wear PERSONAL PROTECTION when working in the aftermath. Boots, gloves, respirators, overalls/tyvek suits are appropriate.
DEMO (remove) all drywall, insulation, carpeting/pad that has been affected.
PRESSURE WASH the framing and flooring.
EXTRACT the water.
TREAT affected areas with an anti-microbial or sanitizing agent.
DRY the structure with air movement and dehumidifiers. It will take DAYS to dry the bound water in the wooden substrate. You must control the humidity indoors to prevent secondary damage; you do not want the humidity above 60%.
VERY IMPORTANT, do not “button up” or re-construct until the structure is dry or you could have microbial development..
